Faryl Smith (born 1995) is an English singer from Kettering who rose to fame after auditioning for the second series of the ITV television talent show Britain's Got Talent, performing as a mezzo-soprano. Although reaching the final, she finished outside the top three. After the show, she rejected offers of contracts from Sony BMG, and instead signed with Universal Classics and Jazz for a 2.3 million contract, the largest ever offered to a schoolgirl. Her debut album, Faryl, was released in March 2009, and became the fastest selling solo classical album in British chart history. On top of her musical career, Smith lives with her parents and continues to attend school.
History
Britain's Got Talent
Before competing in Britain's Got Talent, Smith had performed competetively in the Kettering Eisteddfod, the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, the Pontins Junior Starquest competition and Festival 4 Stars.[2] She then auditioned for the second series of the show, and was put through to the live shows. Before performing live, she and Andrew Johnston were favourites to win.[3] She won her semi-final, performing a cover of Sarah McLachlan's "Angel", by the public vote, placing her into the final.[4] During the show, Simon Cowell described her as "literally one in a million".[4] She then performed in the live final, where she was described by Cowell as one of the five acts (along with George Sampson, Johnston, Signature and Kate and Gin) who had a chance of winning, as well as the bookies' favourite.[5] Sampson eventually won the show as a result of the call in, with Signature second, and Johnston third.[5] As a result of her final performance of "Ave Maria", Smith was invited to be a guest singer at a songwriting awards ceremony in London.[2] Smith then went on to perform in the Britain's Got Talent Live Tour with the other semi-finalists.[6]
During the show, Simon Cowell arranged for free singing lessons to be delivered by leading vocal coach Yvie Burnett to Smith. Burnett previously coached 2007 Britains Got Talent winner Paul Potts and 2006 The X Factor winner Leona Lewis.[7][8] While performing on Britain's Got Talent, Smith was offered record deals, but she and her family turned them down. Her father, Tony Smith, said "We have had offers from people interested in Faryl. But when Simon Cowell, the big man, says your daughter is special, you listen."[7] Cowell described Smith's potential career during the show, saying "I know she says Katherine [Jenkins] is her idol but she is far better than her. She is by far the most talented youngster I've ever heard. When she opens her mouth her voice is just incredible."[9]
Record deal
The day after the Britain's Got Talent finals, Max Clifford, a spokesperson for Simon Cowell, said that it was "quite possible" that Cowell would be signing some of the finalists, including Smith.[10] Over the next few weeks, Smith appeared in the Britain's Got Talent Live Tour, in which she performed a duet of "Walking in the Air" with Johnston.[11] A version of this duet appeared on Johnston's debut album, One Voice,[12] and was tipped as a potential Christmas number-one.[13] Before the release of One Voice, it was released that Smith herself was finalising the details of her own record deal. Her father, Tony Smith, said "we're dotting the 'i''s and crossing the 't's' at the moment to make sure she's protected in every way. She is our baby at the end of the day – she's in great demand and we want to do it our way."[14] In November, it was announced that Smith would be performing on stage in Kettering with her tutor, Sylvia Berryman. Smith said that she was "really looking forward to singing locally again and performing with my singing teacher", and it was again reported that it was hoped Smith would soon sign her own record deal.[15]
In December 2008, The Daily Mail reported that Smith had signed with Universal Music Group for a 2.3 million, multi-album deal that was the "most lucrative recording contract ever handed to a schoolgirl."[16] Smith said "I'm honoured to be joining such a fantastic record company, especially since it's where Katherine [Jenkins] started."[16] Dickon Stainer, speaking on behalf of Universal, said "as soon as we saw Faryl, it became an ambition to sign her."[16] Smith's debut album is due in May 2009,[16] and Universal plans to market her as a pop star.[17] After signing with Universal, Smith performed at the Royal Albert Hall with Jenkins.[16] The Times described Smith as "heir apparent" to Jenkins,[18] who first met her when she won a oompetition in Wales and, by 2009, was acting as her mentor.[19]
In January 2009, plans were released for Smith to perform with Placido Domingo. The idea was suggested by him.[20] In an interview with the Metro, Smith talked about her future plans, insisting that she did not wish to be dubbed as the next Charlotte Church, and spoke of her desire to appear in films on top of her musical career. She said "Films and movies are something I'd really like to do. I've always wanted to act so doing a film would be amazing. It's something I really want to do."[21]
Faryl
Smith's debut album, Faryl, was recorded in London during her Christmas holiday between December 2008 and January 2009, and completed on the third of January.[22][23][24] It features a 60 piece orchestra,[25] and was released on 9 March, 2009.[26] Promotion began in January, with performances at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and an appearance at the debut of Oliver!.[25] Smith also took part in a photoshoot for publicity and cover photos.[25] Smith's father, Tony, said "at the moment we're promoting the album and making sure we're in the right places at the right time."[25] A television advert and music video for "River of Light" have also been recorded to further publicise the release.[27] The only planned album signing is to take place on the day of the release at the Kettering HMV branch.[28] On 23 February, it was reported that the first shipment of albums had arrived with Universal, but due to a pressing error, though they looked like Smith's albums, they actually contained the music of The Fall's album Imperial Wax Solvent.[22] More promotional appearances in the weeks leading up to the release of Faryl included Loose Women, The Paul O'Grady Show, BBC Radio 4, Radio Five Live and BBC Breakfast.[29] On the day of the release, based on presales alone, the album was at number one on the UK Albums Chart,[30] as well as topping the Amazon.co.uk presales chart.[31] Additionally, an initial batch of 80,000 copies of the album were ordered by retailers in the UK.[31] The album became the fastest selling classical solo album in Britain, beating the previous record holder Hayley Westernra, seeling 20,000 copies in the first four days.[32] After the release of Faryl, Smith sang "God save the Queen" live before the Six Nations Test match between England and France at Twickenham Stadium on 15 March.[33] She is also due to perform at the 2009 Classical BRIT Awards, and will be the youngest artist ever to have performed solo at the ceremony.[34]
Personal life
Smith originally attended Henry Gotch Primary School in Kettering and now is a student at Southfield School for Girls,[2][35] but receives private tutoring while working.[36] She enjoys playing football, and formerly played for Kettering Generals FC Under 13 girls,[37][38] and played for the Kettering Generals Under 11s girls' team when they reached the Weetabix League cup final.[39] After signing her record deal, she performed at Rockingham Road for a January 2009 F.A. Cup match between Kettering Town F.C. and Eastwood Town F.C..[39] She also attends a theatre club, plays the guitar and piano and sings in two choirs,[3] including the Masquerade Youth Choir.[40] Her favourite singer is Katherine Jenkins who sent a message from Japan to Smith before her Britain's Got Talent live shows.[41] Smith first met Jenkins after winning the Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod, in Wales.[16] She lives with parents Tony, a former health and safety manager who now works full-time overseeing Smith's activities,[36] her mother Linda, a hairdresser and her older brother Shea, who is training as a plumber.
