Well, I'll be damned \u2028Here comes your ghost again \u2028But that's not unusual \u2028It's just that the moon is full \u2028And you happened to call 

\u2028And here I sit \u2028Hand on the telephone \u2028Hearing a voice I'd known \u2028A couple of light years ago \u2028Heading straight for a fall

As I remember your eyes \u2028Were bluer than robin's eggs \u2028My poetry was lousy you said \u2028Where are you calling from? \u2028A booth in the midwest 

\u2028Ten years ago \u2028I bought you some cufflinks \u2028You brought me something \u2028We both know what memories can bring \u2028They bring diamonds and rust

Well, you burst on the scene \u2028Already a legend \u2028The unwashed phenomenon \u2028The original vagabond \u2028You strayed into my arms

 \u2028And there you stayed \u2028Temporarily lost at sea \u2028The Madonna was yours for free \u2028Yes, the girl on the half-shell \u2028Could keep you unharmed

Now I see you standing \u2028With brown leaves falling all around \u2028And snow in your hair 

\u2028Now you're smiling out the window \u2028Of that crummy hotel \u2028Over Washington Square 

\u2028Our breath comes out white clouds \u2028Mingles and hangs in the air \u2028Speaking strictly for me \u2028We both could have died then and there

Now you're telling me \u2028You're not nostalgic \u2028Then give me another word for it \u2028You who are so good with words \u2028And at keeping things vague 

\u2028'Cause I need some of that vagueness now \u2028It's all come back too clearly \u2028Yes, I loved you dearly \u2028And if you're offering me diamonds and rust \u2028I've already paid
