I Remember You
Music and lyrics: Sara Indrio
I remember you from the scent of paint, petrol and tar
I remember that scar that came on your hand
From that time that you carved a piece of wood to make me a boat.
I remember those heartbroken days of crying in the basement
And you bringing down peeled oranges and tea
The sound of your slippers and then you quietly saying,
He never deserved me.
Now there’s a hole where you used to be
And it’s carving into memory.
Someone said that when the old generation goes
They winds they shelter from forcefully blow
With original sin and I can hear you calling that standpoint total rubbish.
Yeah, you could be so hardheaded at times
And I used to find that part about you so annoying
But now I know you came as far as a man can in a lifetime.
And there’s a hole …
I remember you from the way you were with the kids
And how they’d love your stories about traveling in Europe
Just after the war and they’d come home all muddy, but happy.
I remember you like a backdrop behind it all
And then the sudden fall and it makes me cry over dinner
And the kids mean well but only make it worse by saying you’ve become a star
There’s a hole …
I remember you from wanting to by buried under a tree
Without a stone so I wouldn’t have to bear the burden
Of a long and tiresome period of mourning over you.
I remember how that’s the one time I didn’t argue
Or try to make you act like some mother figure I didn’t have
And instead I thanked you to your face
For everything.
